A Bit About Me

I'm Brenda, a first year student at New York University at the Stern School of Business pursuing a B.S in Accounting with a minor in Business of Entertainment, Music, and Technology. Currently, I am applying to summer internships in the music and entertainment industry to learn more about these sectors and the professionals in marketing and accounting roles. My interests also include forensic accounting, auditing, and social media marketing.

I am beyond thankful to have been selected for the NYU Breakthrough Scholars Leadership Program. This program has supported my professional and personal development through a biweekly first year seminar, leadership workshops, professional panels, site visits, one-on-one mentoring, and full financial support. So far, my favorite Breakthrough Scholars event has been the "Leadership Chat Series" in which a Stern Alumni engages in an open Q&A about their career trajectory, time at Stern, and professional background. As a Co-Chair of Event Planning for the Breakthrough Advisory Council, I am committed to delivering more insightful panels and workshops as well as fun community building events for our scholars!

As a first generation low income student, I felt overwhelmed by college application process and was worried about being able to afford a higher education. However, with the help of free school and community programs I learned more about the process and the many scholarships that help students like myself. Because of this, I am dedicated to empowering underrepresented students to purse a higher education. This spring semester I am excited to be a mentor for the World Changers Mentorship Program through the Academic Achievement Program at NYU. As a mentor, I help students from Pharos Academy in the Bronx through college essay workshops, open discussions about financial aid, and more.

At NYU I also participate in weekly events for the Stern Business Academy. I have learned a lot from the panels they host that range from career exploration, how to set up an effective LinkedIn page, and insights on the recruiting process. In addition, I'm a general member of the Stern & Tisch Entertainment Business Association in which I engage in panels about different careers in the entertainment industry and learn from professionals.

Outside of Stern I spend most of my time as a freelance musician and I have been doing so for a little over 6 years. I play clarinet for Regional Mexican and traditional Oaxacan music. I have performed with a variety of bands including with Banda Las Angelinas and Reflejo de Oaxaca. By sourcing gigs through social media and negotiating contracts with managers, I have been able to build connections with talented musicians, learn from them, and grow. Along the way, I have improved on my time management skills and continued to take initiative since I have decide what contracts to accept and when I need to learn or practice new repertoire. Overall, I feel that performing with different people and at a wide range of events and venues has helped me grow my self confidence, become more adaptable, and share a part of my culture with everyone.

I am originally from Los Angeles, California and some of my personal interests include playing clarinet, traveling, running, and listening to music. You can visit my gallery to see more of these interests or visit my Spotify to check out some of the music I am currently into!
